With fall’s arrival comes the return of the much-beloved service of Evensong & Benediction (“E&B”) at St. Paul’s. Please join us for the first E&B of the season at 4pm on Sunday, September 28 – strictly speaking, the First Evensong of S. Michael & All Angels!
St. Paul’s is among the rare Episcopal parishes in the country where this jewel of the Anglo-Catholic tradition is offered regularly each year, from September’s end/early October through Corpus Christi in June. We welcome you to conclude your 2nd and 4th Sundays each month (and additional Sundays in Advent and Lent and on Major Feasts) with this communal offering of sung prayer and profound devotion.
Evensong is sung Evening Prayer, with the readings from Scripture adorned by hymns and anthems sung by the choir. At Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, Our Lord in His sacramental Presence is exposed at the High Altar for adoration, hymns and the Divine Praises accompanying. Together this liturgy at St. Paul’s combines a rich tradition of choral music with timeless ceremony.
A reception will follow in the atrium.
Music will include:
Setting: Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in G; Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924)
Anthem: And I saw another Angel; Stanford
Voluntaries: Gabriel & Raphael, and Michael, from Archangel Suite; Craig Philips (b.1961)
